A sampling of my compositions.
(2019)
Natalie Zoia, flute | Lilia Olsen, clarinet | John Pope, bassoon
Lauren Culver, violin | Jordan Goldstein, viola | Austin Williams, double bass
My graduate thesis composition was based on “micro-variations:” Each time the droning gesture occurs, it is changed slightly from the previous occurrence, transforming from a single note drone, to a cluster, to a large widely-spaced chord. The pitch content is derived from smaller gestures developing over time while avoiding overtly melodic movement. More thematically, it was originally meant to invoke auditory hallucinations. The subject of my thesis has evolved into an exploration of the frequent difficulty of communicating the effects of mental health symptoms.
(2019)
John Pope, bassoon
Brian Leichtman, electronics
This electroacoustic piece features bassoon and electronics, including live processing. The bassoon part utilizes mostly the high register of the instrument, further augmented by the electronics, which extend the range beyond what the bassoon is capable of.
(2019)
Austin Sanders, baritone
Matthew Lorenz, piano
Text from Psalms 88
This is a piece I sketched quickly, but was slow to complete. I reharmonized the melody seven times I was only happy with this latest version. While I have never considered myself much of a vocal composer, I recently took on the challenge of going outside my comfort zone, writing several vocal pieces in the past few years.
(2013)
String Orchesta
(2018)
Shay Riopel, contralto
José Maria Espinosa Zuniga, piano
Megan Grosso, dancer
Choreography by Jennifer Agather
Titled an infinitive Hebrew verb which translates to something along the lines of “to utter a strangled sound,” the music portrays stifled communication due to disjunct reasoning. Vacillating somewhat abruptly between lamenting sentence fragments and hyper dancing sections, it is one of my many pieces themed around mental illness.
